UNESCO essay writing competition
About a month ago Atiyyah Ameen (Grade 11) entered the UNESCO Secondary Schools Essay Competition. The topic was on social media. Two weeks later it was announced that Atiyyah had won something and would be flying, along with Mrs Sewmangal, to Pretoria to meet the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, as well as the deputy minister and the provincial MEC. It was there that Atiyyah learned she had won first prize in KZN, and was placed second overall in the country! It was a very unique experience for Atiyyah and the three other winners, as they were treated like VIPs. Atiyyah claims that the best prize was having written an essay that someone else had read and appreciated enough to reward her for it. This experience proves that hard work does bring reward, and more learners should feel encouraged to take part in similar competitions, because you never know – you just may end up having lunch with the minister!
Speech and Drama Evening
On Friday, September 26, Dundee High School proudly presented their first theatrical production: ‘Drame Soir’. Learners from Grades 8 to 12 made their parents very proud as they showed off their spectacular talents. A series of beautiful poems, prose scripts, dramatic movements and other humorous group acts were performed by the learners. The evening was filled with laughter and enjoyment. DHS looks forward to staging similar theatrical productions in the future. A very big thank you to all the participants and to Mrs Sewmangal for a successful evening of entertainment.
Finals
Well done to the Grade 12 learners for making their way through their preliminary examinations. All that is left to conquer are those dreaded finals. DHS would like to encourage all Matrics to use these next two weeks to revise at school and make use of your very knowledgeable teachers while you can! This is the last haul, Grade 12s, so become a boxer – “I will work harder!” – and produce results that you, your family and your school will be proud of. Strenuis ardua cedunt!
