Dannhauser residents fight water woes

Unrealistic accounts and poor service are common problems experienced by residents.

Dannhauser – Residents are taking a stand against water woes that have plagued the town.

Unrealistic water accounts and poor service by the Amajuba District Municipality are among the common problems experience by residents.

The Dannhauser Residents Forum got together on Saturday morning at the South Park Grounds to voice their concerns in a special meeting.

The meeting, chaired by Pravin Nair and Colin Krause, aimed to find a way forward with regard to the unrealistic water accounts received from the district municipality.

Over 1o5 residents gathered at the grounds on Saturday, united by poor service. Among the common problems voiced were the unrealistic water accounts and the lack of accountability by the district.

Complaints are allegedly never dealt with, and water meters are not read correctly. One resident received a bill showing 239 kilolitres of consumption, despite not being home for two months.

The reading of water meters was also discussed as residents complained that the workers reading the meters didn’t know what they were doing. This was evident by the hugely inaccurate amounts that appeared on accounts.

“We need to find a solution within the law to get their attention,” said Mr Krause. Mr Krause added that he could not tell residents what they should do going forward, as everyone’s situation was different, but stated that he would only be paying R20 a month from now on. Everyone agreed that this was an acceptable amount.

“Don’t let the letters of demand frighten you,” said Mr Nair. “The fact that they’ve written of some accounts shows an admission of guilt on their part,” he added.

With two dedicated soldiers spearheading their fight, residents are hoping to end the water woes in town for good.
