Guards tackle crime hotspots

The Safe CBD Project has taken steps forward into eradicating crime from the streets of the CBD.

Currently, the area covered by the project stretches across four street blocks.

This area extends from the Allen and Murchison street intersection to the Allen and Harding street intersection. Another extends from the Scott and Voortrekker street intersection to the Scott and Ayliff street intersection.

These areas include shopping complexes and parking lots situated within their blocks.

According to chairman of the project, Yousuf Randeree, these areas will play a pivotal role as the model for the project to be rolled out to other areas of the CBD.

“These areas contain many hotspots for pockets of crime, and we want to tackle these areas first,” he said.

Guards have already begun patrolling the areas.

The costing of the exercise has already been calculated to be R18 000 a month, but the project has structured a feasibility programme for all businesses involved.

“Over time the project will extend to cover all areas of the CBD. The implementation of these measures will ensure shoppers of Newcastle have a variety of stores to shop at easily, without fear of danger to themselves or their belongings,” believed Mr Randeree.
