UPDATE: FNB reopens following bomb scare

Newcastle SAPS K9 units were on scene and searched the premises after all staff and clients were evacuated. According to Gerald Boyd, Branch Manager, the evacuation was a precaution.

First National Bank on Scott Street was closed for a short while on Wednesday afternoon, following a bomb threat.

A unknown man phoned the Newcastle Advertiser shortly after 1pm, and claimed that around 2pm there would be a bomb threat.

According to the anonymous man, three men would be responsible. It remains unclear whether their alleged intention might have been robbery.

”We place high value in the safety of our customers and staff,” he said. ”It is better to be safe than sorry. Even if it has caused some inconvenience we feel it was important to ensure the safety of all involved.”

The bank was opened again for normal business. However, authorities say they will be on high alert.

The Newcastle SAPS bomb specialist unit are currently investigating the threat.
