Park wars continue afresh

For some years now it has been the residents on McKenzie, Coronation, Victoria and Handley Streets who have waged ‘The War of the Park’ – Coronation Park.
The anti-social activities that go on there have been well recorded, and even a platoon of yellow bollards have failed to keep out the large, rowdy crowds that leave behind piles of trash as evidence of their parties and excesses.
Now MacPhail Park on Douglas/Smith Street appears to have undergone a similar demise. Former Dundee resident, Liezl Coetzer, was back in town recently to visit her mother, and was disappointed when she took her kids to have some fun in the park (which includes childrens’ playground equipment).
“The whole park is full of rubbish, and where the kids play there is broken glass. Even used condoms are scattered around. The litter has not been cleared away for ages, and there was a foul smell of rotting flesh. A very unpleasant experience!”
Ironically, a large billboard proclaims the rules of the park – no alcohol, no loud music, no open fires, et cetera. Great, so by-laws have also gone bye-bye…
