Breaking down barriers at the IEC

The Islamic Educational Centre (IEC) held an insightful Professional Development Workshop focused on ‘Unpacking barriers to learning in schools’ on Monday. This was upon recommendation from the South African Council of Educators (SACE).

The programme consisted of notable guest speakers such as psychiatrist at Ladysmith Provincial Hospital, Dr K Narsi, as well as audiologist, Ms P Govender. deputy principal, Mr AA Moola welcomed the audience, emphasising that it is of utmost value to have a connection with your learners.

“Know your child. This means you need to be able to guide, assess and praise them when neccesary,” he said.

Approximately 30 delegates from the Klip River ward attended the event and were fortunate to bear witness to the unfolding of different viewpoints involved in overcoming barriers to learning in schools. Dr Narsi’s concluding message at the end of his presentation summarised the theme and essence of the event quite well when he stated that concern must be shown to children with learning difficulties.

“Be aware and be alert regarding a child’s general well-being. It is important not to be afraid of exploring what is upsetting a particular child.”

It was a great afternoon for all who attended, as they certainly gained insight and greater clarity concerning problems encountered by learners at school.
