Fat disposal woes in King Street

The accumulation of fat has caused a blocked sewer system, this being a recurring problem since 2009

uThukela Water Services spent a portion of Friday morning attempting to rid sewer pipes of fat in King Street. The fat, which is disposed of by several fast food franchises in the area, is problematic for the sewerage system in the area.

The accumulation of fat has caused a blocked sewer system, this being a recurring problem since 2009. uThukela’s Mr Dennis Combrinck says the removal of fat is an expensive undertaking that wouldn’t be necessary if businesses invested in grease traps.

“To get rid of the fat, we need to pour buckets of acid down the drains and each bucket costs over R1000. Businesses need to start playing their part to ensure that this expensive solution doesn’t need to be implemented,” he said.

The acid takes up to four or five days to dissolve the fat.

“The solution is simple – installing grease traps will solve this problem easily,” stressed Mr Combrinck.
