The lowdown on life coaching

Mrs Kruger became a qualified life coach just three years ago. “I wrote my final exam, scoring an A, in 2011. Although I had to undergo formal training, I maintain that life is the most important tutor in an endeavour like life coaching."

Phyllis Kruger is on a mission to reveal the truth about Hollywood’s most popular pastime. Shying away from the infamous ‘how does it make you feel?’, Mrs Kruger’s spin on things makes us wonder what the hype really is about.

A ‘trend’ celebrities like Giuliana Rancic and Britney Spears has embraced with arms and wallets wide open, Mrs Kruger explains the concept of modern-day life coaching, “In layman’s terms, as life coach I become your Global Positioning Service. Together we plot the route you need to take to reach your destination in life; guiding and keeping you on track at all times.”

Mrs Kruger admits people often expect miracles when hiring a life coach and reminds her clients that old habits die hard. Clients require at least four sessions before noticing the benefits of having someone to help them cope with a rat-race like life.

Noticing how simply having a shoulder to cry on benefited others, Mrs Kruger followed her heart and studied psychology. When it dawned on her that the psychological approach was one she didn’t trust or have faith in, she continued her journey, studying trauma counselling, stress management and life coaching.

After completing her most recent studies at the School of Natural Health Sciences in the United Kingdom, Mrs Kruger rekindled her love of life coaching after being diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer little over a year ago. “I was told I only had three months left to live. Being able to tell the tale after a diagnosis like that has only motivated me more to have a positive impact on the lives of others.”

“The pace of life these days is unreal; we live in a world where expectations exceed the bounds of possibility. As a life coach, I turn down the proverbial dial and allow the client to recalculate the direction they’re headed in a stress free environment.”

Explaining life coaching is a relatively new concept in South Africa, Mrs Kruger has come to the conclusion that most people do not understand the advantages of having a life coach.

“I help my clients solve their problems by simply asking the right questions, allowing them to decipher the map of their lives on their own. I create a problem-solving, sharing platform most people desperately need at some point in their lives.”

In a final word of advice, Mrs Kruger concluded, “Stress kills; learn to cope through the help of a life coach. The first step on the road to recovery is acknowledging the problem. Make an appointment and stick to it!”
