Orphan’s plight moves local ophthalmologist

Dr Asgar Sahib, an ophthalmologist on Allen Street, caught the attention of the resident after returning his fee, seeing to an orphan child at no cost and even going on to offer the orphanage she was from free check-ups for any of their children who might need it in future.

In a world quite accurately described by the phrase, ‘each to his own’, selfless acts of kindness often fly under the radar.

A local resident, who witnessed an orphan’s plight being treated with the warm-heartedness it deserved, thought it would be prudent to show the community selflessness is not a dying trait.

The appreciative resident informed this publication of the scene he had witnessed, saying he was moved by a local doctor’s kind gesture.

“It’s not often people do things for someone and want nothing in return; it is great to see that good Samaritans still exist, ” said the resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

When asked what prompted his act of charity, he smiled and admitted; “I have a soft spot for children. When I saw this beautiful little girl I couldn’t help it, I had to help her. I love what I do and don’t mind doing it for free.”

The manager of the Louis Hildebrandt Childrens Home in Volksrust, Elsa van der Westhuizen, thanked Dr Sahib for his kind service and generous offer.

With or without recognition, people who take it upon themselves to offer aid with no regard for remuneration deserve to be commended. Through all the doom, gloom, and everyday atrocities staring us in the face, these small acts of kindness shed a ray of hope that we might one day live in a world where selflessness is only commended by being the norm.
