Collision raises issues

For years, residents and parents have been requesting speed bumps to be placed on the road to slow down speeding motorists.

A S.E.Vawda Primary pupil was struck by a vehicle on Monday outside the school on Olympic Street.

Fortunately the child was not seriously injured, as explained by ER24 spokesperson, Margery Meijerink.

“She suffered a mild abrasion to her arm. The injury is not too serious, but she is in a lot of shock.”

Although witnesses to the incident claimed the child ran out in front of the vehicle without ensuring it was safe to do so, they believed something should be done to ensure the children’s safety in the area.

For years, residents and parents have been requesting speed bumps to be placed on the road to slow down speeding motorists.

Earlier this year, the mayor promised the community the municipality would be placing speed bumps in all areas with high foot traffic.

“Schools are a priority and we want the children to be safe. We also are building sidewalks to make sure people stay of the roads,” he said.

A municipal official confirmed applications to have speed bumps installed had been made.

Although speeding cars in the area may be an issue, a resident in the area, believed speed bumps would not be the solution, but they should be properly supervised.

Apparently, there are traffic guides on duty, but allegedly they leave as soon as most of the children have left.

“They need to have the children properly educated, and guides need to make sure they are respecting laws of the road, just as how the drivers are,” a resident commented.
