What to do if your dog strays

While their environment itself doesn't change, it is disrupted and dogs go looking for their families. It is for this reason people should consider boarding, as it will prevent a lot of heartache

Heather Gero from the SPCA advises pet owners what to do when a pet disappears.

The first step is to contact the SPCA and the Municipal Pound.

“It can save a lot of time and money, as dogs often go out of the area in which they live and owners usually only look in their vicinity or use social networks in an attempt to locate their pets,” explained Mrs Gero.

Although dogs would stray when gates were left open, Mrs Gero said dogs also left their homes when their owners went on holiday.

“While their environment itself doesn’t change, it is disrupted and dogs go looking for their families. It is for this reason people should consider boarding, as it will prevent a lot of heartache,” she said.

She said sterilised pets usually would not stray.

The Municipal Pound can be contacted on 034 328 7757 and the SPCA on 034 318 2346.
