Jail birds get bailed
Mayor, Afzul Rehman, and businesspeople, Johan Pieters and Fathima Seedat, together with Miss Newcastle, Amy Bushell, spent two-and-a-half hours behind bars during CANSA’s Jail and Bail fund-raiser.
The shocking reality of flashing blue lights and cold steel bars was taken in their stride by four Newcastle residents when they faced their ‘sentence’ last weekend.
Mayor, Afzul Rehman, and businesspeople, Johan Pieters and Fathima Seedat, together with Miss Newcastle, Amy Bushell, spent two-and-a-half hours behind bars during CANSA’s Jail and Bail fund-raiser.
The community was out in droves to see these prominent members of Newcastle sweating it out in the makeshift cell provided by Security and Style.
“The fight against cancer is one that is close to my heart. It has affected people in my life before. I’m always looking for a non-profit organisation I can somehow lend my hand to by using my position, and CANSA is just one of them,” said Cllr Rehman.
All the other jailbirds reflected his sentiments in some way or another.
Mrs Seedat proved even jailbirds could have fun, and her enthusiasm persuaded many shoppers at Amajuba Mall to try and bail the four out.
CANSA community mobiliser, Estella Naicker, was extremely pleased with the results of the Jail and Bail.
“We’ve passed last year’s total, and we have passed our targets for this year. We are still taking pledges though, and the full amount has yet to be confirmed,” she commented.
Ms Naicker thanked the jailbirds, the police for arresting and transporting the jailbirds, Amajuba Mall for hosting them, Security and Style for the wonderful jail cell, and finally to the community for coming out to support the organisation in such force.
She also thanked centre manager of the Amajuba Mall, Robbie Matthee for his constant support and accommodating nature towards CANSA.
