Phenomenal Women Community Awards off to a grand start

Mary Dobbie of the Newcastle Crisis Centre, the first of five finalists for the awards, gave a moving talk on her life and work, and what it took for a woman to make a difference in her community.

The Phenomenal Women Community Awards got off to a grand start last Wednesday at the Blackrock Casino.

Women from every walk of life were honoured for their ‘invisible’ contributions.

A group of CANSA committee members and volunteers also attended the function. Community Mobiliser for CANSA, Estella Naicker, gave an informative talk on how to prevent cancer.

Mary Dobbie of the Newcastle Crisis Centre, the first of five finalists for the awards, gave a moving talk on her life and work, and what it took for a woman to make a difference in her community. Captain Amelia Hepple was another guest speaker, who also gave the women an insight into her life and work. Sonja Luus, founder of the initiative, hailed the first event as a success. “We felt it was a great success, and it is getting more and more exciting,” she said.

Sister Mariette Mostert will be the next guest speaker, and her talk is sure to deliver some very inspirational stories from her work in the medical field.

The public is invited to attend the functions, which are not only for the nominated ladies.

Entrance fee is R50 for women who were not nominated, and R30 for nominated guests.

The lucky draw prizes keep getting better and better, as each week more sponsors come on board. Make sure to get your tickets for the Phenomenal Women functions at Blackrock Casino on September 17, September 25 and October 15.

“I would just like to thank my team for everything they have done so far, without you, none of it would be possible. Also, to our main sponsor, Blackrock Casino, we would like to extend our most sincere gratitude,” concluded Mrs Luus.
