Patterson Street – Park of shame

Warning: Graphic content - The plight of businesses and residents along Paterson Street has never been more evident, as more blatant sexual acts are evidently taking place in broad daylight.

From used condoms to daylight ‘intimacy’, the dubious activities at the Paterson Street park has accelerated the ‘birds and bees’ conversation for a young boy.

A resident taking a colleague’s 10-year-old son to the Paterson Street park at around 3.15pm on September 3, said an innocent game of hide-and-seek became a matter of leaving nothing to the imagination.

“We were at the park for a few minutes when I noticed a man and woman, presumably a couple, make their way to the swings. We were about to play-hide-and seek when the pair casually walked over to a nearby tree.

“I didn’t think anything of it,” said the resident.

The first thing she saw when she opened her eyes was the careless couple on their knees. The man scooped the woman in his arms, gently laying her down on the ground.

“I saw him fiddling with his belt as they lay on the ground. They looked me in the eye; how could they not know we were there?” she asked.

The resident couldn’t help but giggle when the boy said, “We should leave before we become part of the crime scene.”

The resident covered the impressionable boy’s eyes and fled the play park in panic.

“I was absolutely horrified!” she exclaimed.

“What makes the situation all the more appalling is that one wouldn’t expect something like this to happen at a children’s park,” said another disgusted resident.

Recently, the ‘daylight prostitutes’ were involved in a confrontation with an employee of a business in Paterson Street, in full view of passing motorists.

According to the employee, who wished to remain anonymous, he was ‘fed up’ with having to clean up used condoms from his employer’s premises every morning.

“It’s disgusting.

“All the condoms are used and I have to pick them up every morning. They don’t care where they throw things,” claimed the employee.

After confronting the workers, the employee was astonished when one threw a brick at him.

Police were forced to intervene, during which a social worker at the scene confirmed the women along the road were indeed prostitutes. They were subsequently ordered to remove themselves from outside the business premises.

SAPS Spokesperson,Warrant Officer Simon Luthuli said, “We cannot make any arrests unless they have solid evidence.”
