Armed with headphones to his ears, vinyls (DJ decks) at his hands,19 year old DJ Inayet Gopie is mixing up a music storm. Born and bred in a family of musicians Inayet began his career as a DJ in 2009 at the tender age of 14. Inayet beamed when he spoke about his first official event, a one year birthday party in 2011. This event set the motion for his fruitful music career, coupled with his cousin Sameer Khan the duo began tackling bigger events such as deejaying in Johanessburg and Durban, and performing on East Coast radio through Limewire. When asked how the experience felt, Inayet smiled shyly and replied “Nervous, but as time goes you get into it”. Inayet describes his love for the art as a ‘natural gravitation’. When Inayet is not deejaying he can be seen with his head buried in his books as he studys towards his degree in Computer Engineering. Inayet hopes to one day study music production, play at bigger more renowned events, and be the proud owner of his own radio station.

*His favourite genre is Electro House. Electro house is a form of house music. This music influences include electro, electroclash, pop, synthpop, and tech house. The term has been used to describe the music of many DJ Mag Top 100 DJs, including Kaskade, Knife Party, Madeon, Porter Robinson, and Zedd.

*Favorite aspect of being a DJ, “is the ability to make people dance”, Inayet said.
*He aspires to one day broaden his horizons and move overseas.
*He believes music production is not an occupation but a vocation.
* New to the world of work as Inayet has recently matriculated in 2013.
*Inayet is currently working on album that infuses the good old 70s, 80s and 90s with the upbeat vibey music of today. This ingenius idea was born as a result of old music having more meaning and substance. Inayet believes by bringing it back one reminds the youth of their backgrounds and beginnings.

Gruelling truths of the life of a DJ
*Being a DJ requires a lot of practice and dedication, while it is a god given talent a lot of time goes into honing the craft.
*A DJ has to know the people, know their likes, dislikes what they think is hot and whats not and this can only be achieved by circulating. A DJ cannot expect to be seated and revive all the answers.
*A lot of time goes into deejaying. One has to be prepared all the time every time. “I once worked for two and a half days non stop”, Inayet added.
*Updated, informed and aware, those are the key concepts one has to familiarize themselves with when pursuing a career in deejaying. A DJ has to know music,”when someone requests a song, one cannot sit there dumbfounded, it is a poor reflection of the DJ”, Inayet stressed.
Deejaying imposes financial constraints as there is a lot of costs involved. These costs involve the purchasing of equipment, downloading new music and software and travelling costs. Inayet believes the most money is spent on upgrading new equipment.
