Fire rages at dump site

Firefighters and municipal officials responded to the scene and at this time are still trying to extinguish the flames

Firefighters are still battling a blaze that started this afternoon at the dump site in Smartiesville.

What started as smoke curling up into the air has turned into a full-blown fire, aided by the wind that has been blowing.

Firefighters and municipal officials responded to the scene and at this time are still trying to control the flames as heavy winds keep the fire going. Extra water trucks had to be sent out to the dump site to help extinguish the flames.

Large graders even rolled in to see if the fire could be put out by pouring rubble and sand over it.

A thick, black cloud of smoke hangs over the whole of the Smartiesville area, with the smell of burning hanging heavy in the air.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
