Toxic smoke spoils Spring morning

Casual Day morning ruined by toxic fire

Casual Day may have dawned crisp and fresh but toxic fumes from a roaring veld fire adjacent to Ann Street spoiled the morning for many passers-by.

The overgrown veld next to the railway line caught a light and with it the heaps of discarded plastic and other rubbish.  The resultant poisonous smoke made breathing unpleasant for school children walking to school and one or two morning walkers.

The Fire Brigade monitored the flames and there was concern that the fire may damage a nearby electrical sub station.  The firemen made sure the flames did not spread. The fire also had a knock on effect – the heaps of rubbish were reduced to blackened heaps exposing more green glass bottles that had also been dumped in the long grass.

Happy Casual Day…
