Scam victim tied up under bridge

Four men appeared and robbed the 40-year-old of his money and cell-phone

A 40-year-old man was left tied up and defenceless after being lured into a trap by a scam artist on Monday afternoon.

The man had just used an ATM in the CBD before being approached by a woman carrying what appeared to be a bag of money she had ‘found’. Scam artists place what looks like a bundle of money on the ground, pretend to ‘discover’ the money and then promise to share the loot with their prospective victim. In this instance, the 40-year-old was confronted by a lady who showed him a bag allegedly containing cash.

He was encouraged to seek out a quiet place in which to divvy out the said money. When they arrived in the Kandahar Avenue area, they went under the bridge. Four men then appeared and robbed the 40-year-old of his money and cell-phone.

During the robbery, the suspects tied the man’s hands and feet. K9 Unit members were alerted to the robbery and found the man tied up under the bridge.  The suspects had fled the scene.

Ladysmith detectives are investigating a case of common robbery.
