Arrest for illegal firearms in Weenen

Police managed to apprehend a suspect, who was found to be in possession of a .38 Special revolver with no ammunition

Police arrested a man for possession of an unlicensed firearm in Weenen on Thursday, August 21.

Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police (POP), as well as the Tactical Response Team (TRT) from PMB and Port Shepstone, were patrolling the Vumbu area of Weenen when they identified a group of people suspected to be carrying firearms. When the group saw the police, they ran away and an AK-47 was found abandoned.

Police managed to apprehend a suspect, who was found to be in possession of a .38 Special revolver with no ammunition.

32-year-old Nkosiyazi Halington Majozi was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and appeared in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court on Friday, August 22. The case was remanded until Friday, August 29, and he was released on warning by the court.

The recovered firearms will be taken for ballistics testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of a crime in the country.

“The police will continue with their operations to eliminate all illegal firearms that are in the hands of criminals, ” said Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni (KZN provincial commissioner).
