Wrestling builds confidence

Check out some top-class wrestling action on Saturday at the Arbor Park Sports Grounds, from 8am continuing throughout the day.

Wrestling is an age-old sport that has left its imprint on many parts of history.

From the training of soldiers to an interesting past time, this sport has survived the ages, and Newcastle is producing some great athletes in the sport.

To put into perspective just how far the town has come, the town will play host to the KwaZulu-Natal Open Tournament this weekend.

Between 200-300 participants from around the country will make their way to the town and show their prowess in the sport.

It seems the sport is sometimes misjudged by many, and secretary of the Newcastle Wrestling Club, Lizzy de Wet ,exposed these misconceptions for what they really were- misconceptions.

“The sport is lovely! We have participants from as young as six, and some of our older members are over 40.”

She elaborated on the benefits of the sport by explaining how the sport helped children with ADHD by teaching them to focus on the task at hand.

The club also provided its members with the opportunity to participate in more than six tournaments nationally every year.

Head coach, Danie de Wet believed that the sport was amazing in helping the body develop.

“At the tournament you see amazing things. I’ve seen children with disabilities take on able-bodied people with ease,” he said.

He emphasised the sport did not encourage violence, but rather instilled athletes’ confidence and enabled them to defend themselves.

Those viewers who watch the more famous Wrestling on TV, he reminded they should not be expecting to break chairs and tables over their opponents’ heads if they joined the club.

“This is amateur wrestling not professional wrestling.”
