Sentraal rugby grounds now an eyesore

The grounds and clubhouse have been systematically destroyed by vandals and thieves.

If you keep very still and there is not a breath of air, you can just about hear the faint blow of a referee’s whistle and the cheer of an appreciative crowd.

The sounds may echo around the now-derelict Sentraal Rugby Club grounds in Glencoe, which was once a local landmark and the scene of many a famous victory by Sentraal’s legends.

The grounds and clubhouse have been systematically destroyed by vandals and thieves.

Sentraal has long since moved the field and clubhouse to Dundee High School, where they have ploughed in thousands of Rands.

FC Bester, past Sentraal President (who now serves on the Sharks Rugby Board and is also Chairman of the Endumeni Residents’ Association), believes that the field is an eyesore at the entrance to Glencoe.

Councillor Anthon Raubenheimer agreed with the sentiment, and asked that the Technical Services Department investigate what can be done.

Mark Donaldson, Technical Services Manager, said a percentage of government funding (the municipal infrastructure grant) received by municipalities should be spent on sport and recreation facilities, and he will report back to the ward committee.
