Vryheid Landbou High School: GLOBE students still bask in their success

As promised, full coverage on the Waste Management Team's successful tour to India.

GLOBE is an international science and educational program that creates a network of students, teachers and scientists from around the world. The teachers receive inquiry based instructions and then encourage the learners to do research, which connects the learners globally through science. The mission is to foster awareness of the importance of sustaining and conserving our environment.

GLOBE is an innovative way to get learners excited about scientific discoveries, both local and global. It is supported by NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the US Department of State.

Twelve Landbou learners had an opportunity to participate in this annual meeting. Miss Khonjelwayo (Science teacher) and Mr L Mathenjwa accompanied the learners. They took along the research they had done on three projects: grey water, organic farming and the extraction of heat from compost (alternative energy). Our learners shared their scientific research with 35 countries that also attended the conference.

One evening, a cultural event was held. The Landbou learners performed the ever popular Gumboot Dance and were given a standing ovation!

Included in the hectic program were educational field trips and the conference was concluded by a cultural sightseeing tour. Last but not least, Landbou was given the opportunity to do collaborative research with one of the agricultural schools from Argentinia.

Landbou would like to thank the following role players:

The Department of Education, for allowing our learners to participate in GLE – India; the National Department of Science and Technology, for introducing Landbou to GLOBE and for funding the trip; Mondi, for their support; the University of KwaZulu Natal, for testing the learners’ research samples; the Department of Home Affairs, for their help with documents; local businesses and the Landbou community for their support.

A special word of thanks and congratulations to our two staff members and learners and their parents! They have not only done us proud, but are great ambassadors for South Africa!

Here at Landbou, we settle for nothing less than the greatness we are capable of!

Cricket: Landbou played in a tournament in Pongola from August 15 – 17. We played against Vryheid High School and Grace College. This time around, the winning trophy stayed behind, but well done anyway, boys!

Soccer: Landbou played in the Utrecht Soccer tournament. We beat the Barbarian team 5 – 0 and drew 0 – 0 against Sarel Cilliers and VHS B-team.

In the semi-finals, we lost in a penalty shootout. Landbou played Amajuba in the last round and won the overall third place. Well done, guys!
