The hype about Hayden

"Hayden has big dreams and the determination to succeed in motocross. Direction and maturing of his skills through training will ultimately be where his success will come from."

Motocross enthusiast, Hayden Hughes will compete as part of the South African team at FIM Africa Southern Region Motocross Championship on August 31 in Kitwe, Zambia.

The youngster is known for his fearlessness by KTM fanatics across Newcastle.

A fellow KTM lover said, “I’ve heard a lot about Hayden and can’t believe that an 11-year-old on a KTM 65 can give the big boys a run for their money in the skills department.”

In 2014 alone, Hayden was placed first in three KwaZulu-Natal Motocross Regional Championship races in February, March and May. His was also placed fourth and sixth in the South African National Motocross Championship in the MX 65cc division in February and April respectively.

Taking up motocross for the first time in August 2011 and professionally in July, 2012, Hayden has shown improvements in his cornering, diet and secondary training, concentration, balance and braking.

Coach André Dearden assessed Hayden in 2012 and 2013. His rider assessments read: “Hayden has big dreams and the determination to succeed in motocross. Direction and maturing of his skills through training will ultimately be where his success will come from.”

Hayden will take on the Mindolo Track later this month and is cautiously optimistic about his chances of obtaining a first place. If the young champ pulls it off, he will be awarded his Protea Colours; an achievement that needs no explanation.

The cost of Hayden’s trip to Zambia is R25 661. Although the amount includes airfare, accommodation and race fees, it is still astronomical for most. Hayden has come to realise that sponsorship plays a vital role in such a competitive sport. Without the support of his previous sponsors, he would not be where he is today.

Hayden thanked Amigos Signs, DA-XA Sands, Bertling and MWC Project Control Services for their support thus far.

On behalf on the Newcastle Advertiser, we wish Hayden well. Bring home the gold for South Africa and Newcastle.
