24-year-old busted with AK-47

Police are investigating the possibility that the suspect may have been involved in the crimes of murder and attempted murder

A 24-year-old man was arrested red-handed with an AK-47 on Wednesday (August 20) at about 10.45pm. He was arrested by officers attached to the National Intervention Unit, assisted by a Project Team comprised of Ezakheni police, Cluster Trio Task Team and Ladysmith Crime Intelligence Unit.

The officers were busy with anti-crime activities in the area and received information about a possible unlicensed firearm, which led them to a house in Ezakheni C-Section. A 24-year-old was subsequently arrested after he was found in possession of an AK-47 rifle.

The suspect faces charges of being in possession of an illegal firearm. The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it may have been used in other crimes committed in the area.

Police are also investigating the possibility that the suspect may have been involved in the crimes of murder and attempted murder.

The suspect appeared in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (August 21) on the firearm charge.
