KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service: Raising awareness of road safety in schools

Paramedics put on a display for schoolchildren to educate them on emergency procedures and road safety.

PUPILS and staff from Victory Park Primary School, in Industria Road, Vryheid, were treated to an exciting and informative demonstration on different aspects of motor vehicle accidents and emergency procedures by KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service and JVS Towing on Wednesday morning, August 13.

In an attempt to raise awareness amongst children of the dangers of not buckling up, as well as how to deal with other hazards and emergency situations which may arise when travelling by car, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service arranged a demonstration in which dummies were used to illustrate the outcome of a motor vehicle accident, where only one of the occupants of the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.

A pseudo-accident scene was set up on a vacant piece of land across the road from the school, using a car which had presumably already been in an accident, judging by the extent of the existing damage. Two dummies were positioned in the banged up vehicle, the ‘driver’ wearing a seatbelt, but the ‘passenger’ not. A smashed windscreen and the ‘passenger’ dummy sprawled across the bonnet of the vehicle attest to the most likely outcome of not wearing a seatbelt in the event of an accident.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service’s vehicles arrived on the scene, sirens blaring and paramedics handled the scene as they would a real accident scene, taking care of the patients to illustrate to the Victory Park pupils how such a situation would be handled under authentic circumstances.

The dummy was placed on a stretcher and the pupils were shown how severe injuries incurred by not wearing a seatbelt could potentially be.

After the informative and educational talk, delivered by KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service’s own JB, the pupils were invited to ask questions and share their thoughts, while JVS Towing ‘recovered’ the vehicle and removed it from the scene in the correct manner.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service would like to thank Seedat’s and A1 Snacks for their contribution towards the event.
