IEC learners excel at Eskom Science Expo

Mohamed Uzair Rassool was the recipient of the Eskom floating trophy for the most innovative project in his category.

From budding rocket scientists to the simple impact of soap on fat, the Eskom Science Expo held at the Indoor Sports Complex on Friday had it all!

The Regional Science Expo was undoubtedly a very successful, informative and creative event where learners from all over Northern KwaZulu-Natal displayed their scientific, engineering, geographical, astronomical and environmental projects for all to see! These displays made for very interesting observations.

Six learners from the Islamic Educational Centre (IEC) participated in the event, of which three excelled. Zuhairra Sardiwalla, Mohamed Uzair Rassool and Zaheera Kharva were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals respectively for their efforts.

In addition to these awards, Zuhairaa Sardiwalla was chosen as a finalist to represent Northern KwaZulu-Natal at the national finals to be held in Pretoria during September. Her project entitled ‘Enhancing the Security of Finger Print Images’ advocated the use of finger prints in the motor industry.

She has been invited to the Durban University of Technology on Monday to discuss her findings with a specialist lecturer in the field.

Mohamed Uzair Rassool was the recipient of the Eskom floating trophy for the most innovative project in his category.

His invention centred around a life-saving device that will prevent toddlers from drowning in a bathtub. He also received a book prize and R200 in cash.

Zaheera Kharva took it upon herself to examine the impact of pollution in her hometown of Colenso.

The principal and staff of the IEC would like to extend their congratulations to the learners, and express their gratitude to Miss Anderson of Egerton Primary and her dedicated team for a well-organised event.
