Community rallies to help accident victims

Town rally together to aid grieving families after tragic accident.

A tragic accident in which seven people died – including three from one Congolese family – has seen the town rally round to assist the grieving survivors and their family.

The gruesome accident claimed seven lives after a head-on collision on the Dundee/Helpmekaar road on July 27. Lupemba Achille and his two children, aged nine and and two, died in the crash. The Congolese family ran a hair-dressing salon on Willson Street.

Pastor Mabiko of the Abundant Life Church and colleague, Mr Amuzaki, stepped in to assist with funeral arrangements and enlisted the help of Mayor Thulani Mahaye.
Mayor Mahaye did not hesitate to arrange for a food voucher from government agency SASSA, a tent for the funeral and meals. Sizwe Funeral Parlour also assisted the Achille family – despite them not having any valid documents to process the funeral arrangements.

However, Mrs Achille and her three-year-old daughter, who were not in the car at the time of the accident, have been left stranded.

* Hospital staff and the Mayor also addressed a memorial service for the nurse and two pharmacy assistants who were killed in another road tragedy on the Colenso road on July 25. The memorial service took place at the Dundee Moth hall last Wednesday. Busisiwe Mazibuko, Crisis Centre Nurse, Slindile Nsibande and Thobile Khanyile were buried last Saturday.
