Enforced compliance with the law saves the day

A security guard and fine system have reduced dumping, says Waste Management's Nick Swanepoel.

Enforcement by the municipality has reduced dumping at the Kirkland Street informal dump site to almost zero.

This was the response of Nick Swanepoel of Waste Management, asked of the fate of the informal dumping site since a fine system and on site enforcement was implemented.

He further appealed to residents to act responsibly when disposing building rubble for free at the waste disposal site.

Speaking specifically on building rubble, Mr Swanepoel said this was being progressively moved to the dump site, where it would be used as covering material.

“Due to the large volumes of waste that was dumped, this process could take some time and is also budget dependent.”

As a final word of caution, Mr Swanepoel said the area off Kirkland Street had been designated an open space or green belt area, and no development could take place unless it was rezoned.
