Signing off on the dump

“How can the municipality expect one sign to stop the people from dumping? We need policing of this matter. How long do we have to wait before the issue is finally resolved?"

A sign attempting to ward off dumpers from disposing rubbish on the illegal Kirkland Street dump, has done little to stop it.

Frustrated Paradise residents are tired of having to put up with the irresponsible behaviour from people who just couldn’t be bothered.

One resident who wished to remain anonymous, said, “We have spoken to our ward councillor. We have addressed the matter directly to the municipality, and still nothing.”

The resident said although the erection of sign boards was a step in the right direction, it was nowhere near enough.

He speculated if the municipality did not address the issue urgently, the effects on the area would be serious.

“Our land values are going to drop, the environment in the area is going to be damaged, and already there is an issue with vagrants in the area.”

Ward 4 Councillor, Tanya De Jager, was adamant she played her part in addressing the matter.

“I have done all I can. I have taken the matter before council and Exco. I have been to the site personally to stop people from dumping.”

She added when she had brought the matters to the attention of the relevant departments, she was told there was no money available to address the matter.

“How can the municipality expect one sign to stop the people from dumping? We need policing of this matter. How long do we have to wait before the issue is finally resolved?”

Although many attempts were made to get official comment from the communications department of the municipality, none was forthcoming at the time of going to print.
