Update: Veld fire next to N11 rages on

Fortunately, fast action by officials and farmers on scene diverted the flames away from the homes.

The veld fire next to the N11 is still raging, as the wind shows no sign of letting up.

At approximately 1.30pm this afternoon, officials reported a massive runaway veld fire next to the N11 in the Bismark area, between Newcastle and Ladysmith.

According to sources, officials on scene have no radio contact with the control room in Newcastle and visibility on the road is close to zero.

Danielle Grunig, a resident of Durnacol commented on the situation: “I live almost 8 kilometers away from the fire, and thick white smoke is covering the entire area surrounding my house.”

A report from Richard Marais of South African Community Crime Watch Newcastle, indicated homes on Lilydale Farm were in danger of being consumed by the fire. Fortunately, fast action by officials and farmers on scene diverted the flames away from the homes.

Officials are working feverishly to minimise the damage caused by the fast spreading flames, a task made difficult by the expanse of the area, and the fierce wind. Unconfirmed reports indicate the fire is now moving towards Durnacol.

Residents of Newcastle can now witness the smoke rising from the fire. Motorists in the area are again urged to drive slowly, as the smoke is obscuring the N11, making for very dangerous driving conditions.
