Huge blaze threatens farmers

Emergency services have reported a massive runaway veld fire, approximately 30km from Newcastle near Bismark.

According to reports, the fire is raging uncontrolled and a cloud of thick smoke is currently obscuring the N11.

The Dannhauser fire team is on scene, as well as all farmers in the area. The Newcastle fire team is also en route.

The fierce wind and dry conditions are feeding the inferno, causing other fires to spring up in and around Newcastle. Protection Services have been kept busy today, with more than five fires before 11am this morning.

Motorists are urged to drive slowly and carefully, as livestock is also being moved to different camps, to prevent loss.
