MLS commemorates Child Protection Week

This campaign has a clear message: children’s rights are human rights – all South Africans must know and respect them

All government departments were urged to commemorate National Child Protection Week (CPW) from June 2–6, 2014. Learners at MLS informed the assembly about the importance of such a campaign.
This campaign, which began in 1997, aims to ensure that children’s rights are protected as outlined in the Constitution as well as the Children’s Act.
This campaign has a clear message: children’s rights are human rights – all South Africans must know and respect them.
The responsibility of ensuring the safety of children lies with parents and caregivers. Learners were encouraged to report child abuse, exploitation and neglect either to a person they trust or use the toll free number 0860 055 555.
The following learners demonstrated a variety of activities:
· Ntombizine Majozi informed learners about the history and aims of the CPW campaign.
· Senamile Mbona outlined the significance of the green ribbon. Green refers to life and growth and it is also a symbol to show that you care and support Child Protection Week.
· Bulelwa Dubazane, Alwande Vilakazi, Khethokuhle Khumalo, Londwakahle Zwane and Luvuyo Khanyile drew pictures and discussed the message in their posters to the assembly about the importance of protecting children and giving them a safe and secure environment.
