Update: Policeman dies in tragic collision

According to police, the deceased was travelling back to his home in Arbor Park after picking up his teenage son from school, when the collision occurred.

A sergeant with the Newcastle SAPS, has died tragically in a collision on the N11 near the off ramp for Newcastle and Industrial Road. According to police, the deceased was travelling back to his home in Arbor Park after picking up his teenage son from school, when the collision occurred.

Circumstances surrounding the collision are murky. However, it can be confirmed the deceased was travelling on a motorcycle, and was involved in a head-on collision with a double-cab bakkie.

The victim’sĀ son was transported to MediClinic Newcastle after sustaining serious injuries during the crash. His condition was described as critical by officials on scene.

Cluster Head of Communications, Captain Shooz Magudulela, confirmed the victim was in the employ of the Newcastle SAPS.

“It is unclear at this time exactly what happened,” he said. “A case of culpable homicide has been opened.”

The driver of the bakkie was also taken to hospital. Family members who arrived on scene informed media the man had sustained a head wound, but was in a stable condition.
