Two children were announced dead on Wednesday, May 13 after falling into a pit at an Early Childhood Development centre in Nquthu.

The two are believed to have been playing, chasing a tyre when they stumbled into the pit on the property.

KZN Social development MEC Weziwe Thusi has has ordered an investigation into the centre.

The facility will however remain open until the probe is complete.

KZN Department of Social Development spokeswoman Ncumisa Fandesi said that councillors had been sent to the area.

“We will also be looking at providing trauma counselling for the children at the ECD centre, because you can imagine everyone playing with their friends the one day and then waking up the next day and their friends are no longer there. So it will be an extensive process that will take some time,” she concluded.
