UNLIKE last year, this year’s Lions Mayfair was blessed with perfect weather – sunny days and cool (not cold) evenings. And the community of Vryheid responded with tremendous support.

Record crowds poured into Cecil Emmett Park last Friday and Saturday, most of them heading directly to the funfair with its bright lights and screams from those already on the hair-raising rides. There really was something for all ages at the funfair, with small children being content to go quietly round on a little toy train, while their elders were being flung about up in the air and screaming their heads off.

Meanwhile, the stalls and flea market were there when the people came back to earth, and other stalls could satisfy most appetites with their selections of food and drink. Some stalls were there to make money, some were there simply for the exposure – Vryheid Tourism for instance, and the SPCA.

So, now Vryheid has had its last fling before winter – the Lions Mayfair seems to divide the year like that. But the support that the community gave to the Mayfair will enable the Lions Club of Vryheid to extend the Mayfair’s purpose for some time into the year ahead. All the proceeds of the Mayfair will go back to the community in the form of Lions’ projects.

That’s why it happens in the first place – to raise funds to be ploughed back into the community. So, thank you Vryheid for the wonderful support.

See you next year.
