Glencoe Main Cemetery also in a state of disrepair

Vandals strike at Gelncoe Main Cemetery

Vandalism, litter and unruly grass have spun out of control not only at the Burnside Cemetery but also at the Glencoe Main Cemetery in Muzuvele Street. Much like Burnside, the cemetery is in a state of disrepair even though they have caretakers (otherwise known as ‘team leaders’). The neglect of this cemetery is apparently due to a shortage of caretakers, with only three employed to maintain the site. Maintenance by caretakers is a work-intensive process, and as a result the cemeteries end up in a state of neglect if there is a shortage of staff.
However, hope is in sight according to Patrick Ndlovu, Assistant Waste Manager at Endumeni Municipality, provisions has been made in the budget to cater for the hiring of more caretakers and also to fund the erecting of a fence at the cemetery. Members of the community are hopeful to see the rampant vandalism and sad state of the grounds come to an end, with regular maintenance being performed in the future.
