ANC water to wash cars?

This is water paid for by the public at large, not merely supporters of one political party

Editor – Elections are here and all sorts of promises are being made. In fact, by the time you read this letter, the voting will be done and the new government elected. Of course, the tallying up of the votes will take a bit of time.

But let me get to my point. During the public holiday on Thursday last week (May 1), the ANC held some sort of a campaign in Fairclough Road (past the court cricket premises), where they were braai’ing and cars were being washed. Amazingly, those running the campaign thought that it was okay to connect a hose pipe to a water outlet opposite the road outside departmental buildings and use that water to wash the cars.

This is water paid for by the public at large, not merely supporters of one political party. What would’ve happened if a DA or MF supporter had stopped for a quick car wash. They would’ve almost certainly been turned away.

This seems to be the norm these days, with legitimate ratepayers paying for services enjoyed by those who don’t pay and just expect things to be handed to them on a plate. I think the sense of entitlement that some people have should fade away, as it no longer applies. It’s been 20 years of democracy and some quarters are still blaming the old regime. How convenient that it’s never the new government’s fault for anything! With this sort of attitude, we’ll never be able to move into a truly New South Africa and leave the past behind, where it belongs.

I hope the incident on Thursday is not indicative of the way things will be after the elections. We need accountability and not people who are always on the take because they somehow think they deserve it. Let’s hope everyone voted wisely for a new and effective administration!
