SPCA targeted by criminals

"I am at a loss for words." - Heather Gero, Newcastle SPCA.

Not even NGOs are safe from the criminal element.

The Newcastle SPCA was burgled on Friday night, April 25.

An electric jigsaw, grinder, welding machine, electric drill, lawnmower, a 50 metre extension cord, two tool kits and other tools were stolen out of the SPCA’s tool-shed.

According to Natalie Harris, the receptionist at the SPCA, the theft was discovered on Saturday morning when one of the general workers, Zweli Madonsela, had gone to get dog food.

“He noticed a brick had been put in front of the door and when he took a closer look, he noticed the lock and screws to the shed had been removed and that it had been broken into. The burglars even made off with the door’s lock and screws,” explained Ms Harris.

Angry about the burglary, Mrs Gero voiced her disgust.

“No one has the right to take anything that does not belong to them. But to take from people who have less and who have to work hard for what they have, to care for the community’s animals, this shows how low mankind has stooped.”

Mrs Gero said the burglary has left a wound that would not easily heal.

“We are essential for the care of the town’s animals and now we have to spend time reporting the crime and seeing what has been stolen, instead of caring for the animals.”

Mrs Gero further stated that while the SPCA had insurance coverage, there would be costs involved in the theft.

“There will be an excess payment on our insurance, which means monies intended for food and medical costs for the animals will now go to this. I am at a loss for words.”

Police spokesperson, Captain Shooz Magudulela, confirmed a case had been opened and the matter was being investigated.

“We have no suspects yet, but we are urging home owners, businesses and other organisations to upgrade their alarm systems and get security guards if necessary.”
