Original story

Peet Barnard is doing much better after responding positively to his cancer treatment.

Peet was diagnosed with cancer in February last year. The cancer initially affected his kidneys, pancreas and liver but later spread to his brain, leaving him completely blind.

When a Ladysmith Gazette journalist visited Klein Peet and his family on Monday, March 24 , he could not stop talking and laughing. He animatedly told the journalist about his experiences in hospital and was extremely happy to hear her voice.

Peet completed his chemotherapy in November 2013  after the CNS relapse. On March 3 he went to Greys Hospital for his results and it was declared inconclusive. On March 17 he had his first Polygram infusion at the Ladysmith Provincial hospital. Every six weeks Peet visits this hospital for this infusion which runs for over six hours resulting in Peet spending the night in hospital. His parents Michelle and Peet Barnard are pleased with Peet’s improvement as he can now move his legs and with the help of his parents takes a few steps in the house. “I am so thankful to God for the big improvement with Peet and we know and beleive that he will get his eye-sight back”, says Michelle. His best friend Cheeky (Peet’s dog) is thrilled to have Peet back at home as Peet plays with him the whole day. On May 1 Peet will be turning 10 years old and his birthday wish is to hear and meet his icon, Snoetkop, an Afrikaans singer and also hopes to visit the seaside soon. “I want to feel the sea sand and water on my skin”, says Peet. Peet and the family will like to say a special thank you to Dr Beverly Neethling, Dr Van Heerdin, Mrs L. Slabbert and all the people that helped the family during Peet’s fight against cancer.
