East Street crumbles

Motorists are forced to use just one lane once they near the four-way stop as the condition of the road is so bad.

THE STATE of East Street just before one reaches the four-way stop between East and Market Streets can be described as nothing less then appalling.

The tar in this street seems to have suffered great damage in the past few years and as a result it has started to “buckle” under all the weight.

According to residents around the area, heavy trucks park at the area whilst their drivers take a break from their journeys or stop to buy food at local garages and other food outlets.

Although two truck stop projects on the edges of Vryheid were founded late in 2012 to stem the flow of heavy vehicles into the centre of Vryheid, some heavy vehicles are still grinding their way through the town and in the process destroying road surfaces.

Although the left side of the road as one travels into town has two lanes, motorists are forced to use just one lane once they near the four-way stop as the condition of the road is so bad.

As the roadwork programme for fixing potholes around town continues, many community members are hoping that issues such as the one on East Street will be given enough attention.
