Last Wednesday there was a municipal by-election in Vryheid in our Ward 22. It was won by the ANC, which in effect retained the seat. But it was a by-election that was postponed twice. It was a by-election that in our view involved massive electoral fraud, or an attempt at a massive fraud, which was prevented as far as was humanly possible by one man, Andre Lotter.

By-electHe partly succeeded but even now, not one person nor political party has been held to account. Not one of the more than 1,800 people, nor one of the contesting political parties, nor any possibly (you might even say probably) complicit IEC officials has been penalised in terms of the applicable laws.

We are poorer for that; not just the actual residents within Ward 22, but the whole of Vryheid, AbaQulusi, KZN and ultimately South Africa.
