“What are we supposed to do?” This was a question asked by a resident who phoned the Vryheid Herald on Monday. It is deadline day to pay your municipal lights and water account – you don’t pay, you get cut off, and the re-connection fee is not a trifle.

As a result of strike action, the municipal cash hall in Mark Street is closed. You can pay your municipal account at some supermarkets and the Post Office, but some don’t take cheques. Besides, why should residents be so inconvenienced?

When spoken to on Monday morning, Cllr Harry Heyns said he’d confirm the municipality’s position. He met with the Municipal Manager and minutes later said that it had been agreed that in view of the strike, the deadline would be extended to Wednesday, March 12.

If the strike action had not been resolved by then, then the situation regarding accounts would be re-examined.
