Navy descendants take the tour

John Sharp is the grandson of Charles Reyolds-Sharp, who was one of the youngest men to join the Navy

A couple from England were in town on Sunday to take a tour of historical sites their grandfather frequented during the Siege of Ladysmith.

John Sharp is the grandson of Charles Reyolds-Sharp, who was one of the youngest men to join the Navy. Charles joined the Navy at the tender age of 16 years old as a Midshipman and was in Ladysmith during the time of the Siege. His son (John’s father), Gerald Sharp, wrote a book entitled ‘The Siege of Ladysmith’.

Now, all these years later, John and his wife Julie Duffy were in Ladysmith on Sunday to take a tour of the Siege Museum as well as many places around town which are mentioned in the book. Leading them on the informative tour was local historian / tour guide Liz Spiret.

John and Julie are here from England on a two-week holiday and they say that their visit to Ladysmith was the highlight of the trip. “It’s really interesting and quite exciting to actually see all these places where my grandfather was,” enthuses John.
