Young lives at risk

"The grass on the pavement is so long that the children are forced to walk on the road and here they have no protection from the passing vehicles. Some of the vehicles speed past here and there are no speed humps"

Speeding vehicles and long grass are placing the lives of young children at risk.
This is the opinion of a ‘Concerned Resident’ who lives in Jasmine Road close to Forderville Primary School. The resident who did not want to be named told the Estcourt News that everyday he witnesses a potentially life-threatening situation when children arrive and leave the school.
“The grass on the pavement is so long that the children are forced to walk on the road and here they have no protection from the passing vehicles. Some of the vehicles speed past here and there are no speed humps,” he says.
The resident says that he called Umtshezi Municipality about two years ago, requesting the erection of speed humps in Jasmine Road.
He says he reasoned that this road is busier than the neighbouring Dahlia Road, which has more than four speed humps.
“At least if there are speed humps, the motorists will be forced to drive slower and they can be aware of the children walking on the road,” he added.
He hopes that the authorities would consider his request.
In response Umtshezi Municipal Manager Nonhlanhla Njoko said that the Civil Department is currently working on a list of speed hump applications.
“A letter for an application accompanied by a petition, signed by people around the area/street needs to be submitted to the municipality for a speed hump to be erected,” added Ms Njoko.
