Off duty student constables catch suspect

They turned to find a man trying to wrestle a cell-phone from the hand of a woman.

Two off-duty Student Constables were shopping in the CBD when they reacted to a crime–in-progress and ended up making an arrest.
On the afternoon of Monday, November 25, the two Elandslaagte policemen were walking in Murchison Street when they heard someone shouting for help.

They turned to find a man trying to wrestle a cell-phone from the hand of a woman.
When the suspect saw he was attracting the attention of passersby, he let go and ran. Student Constables Nkosinathi Miya and Lydia Maduna gave chase. The suspect was no match for the speed of Student Constable Miya, who quickly caught up and arrested him.

A passing police vehicle from Colenso SAPS stopped and helped the student constables transport the 22-year-old would-be cell-phone snatcher to Ladysmith police station, where he was charged with attempted robbery. The suspect is set to appear in court on December 9.
