Vandalism seems to be an ongoing problem within the community.

The perimeter wall at Paradise Sports Grounds has been targeted by the destructive hands of vandals and the swings at the park in FW Beyers Avenue have also been vandalised. Vish Govender, Divisional Head of Parks, Recreation, Cemeteries  and Community Services, says vandalism is a social problem, with issues such as drugs, gangsterism and unemployment possibly contribute to destructive behaviour.

“We would like to form a partnership with the community to put an end to vandalism,” says Mr Govender.

Repairing park and sports ground equipment is a costly endeavour and Mr Govender says the municipality can not afford to hire and allocate security guards across Newcastle.

The facilities are for the community and if someone is seen vandalising the property, they are urged to contact the Protection Services immediately on 034 328 4700.”
