Ladysmith runners take on first-ever ‘virtual’ Comrades Marathon

Participants were encouraged to run any distance between 5km and 90km, and log their distances on the Comrades web page

A large number of local runners took to the streets on Sunday morning (June 14) to participate in the inaugural Comrades ‘Race the Legends’ virtual run.

June 14 was earmarked for the 95th running of the Comrades Marathon. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event had to be cancelled.

In order to maintain the Comrades spirit, a virtual Comrades Marathon was held instead, with many Ladysmith runners joining counterparts from across the country and the world.

Participants were encouraged to run any distance between 5km and 90km, and log their distances on the Comrades web page.

Emnambithi Striders decided to honour Comrades 2020 by getting together a large contingent of runners on Sunday morning.

It was bitterly-cold, with the temperature at the start being -4 degrees Celsius.

However, the Comrades spirit shone through and the 15 runners completed a 21.1 km course in various times. In addition, others managed to walk 5km as a group.

Congratulations to all for maintaining the spirit of Comrades and road running in general.
