The Estcourt Boxing Club invited fighters and spectators to the tournament, which was scheduled to take place at the taxi rank in Alexandra Street, but had to move due to unforeseen circumstances.

The bout between Langalihle Memela and Malibongwe Buthelezi.

Although the tournament started more than three hours later than scheduled, it was evident that the participants, coaches and spectators were excited.

Altogether 50 fighters from Ladysmith, Estcourt, Ezakheni and Steadville entered and 11 bouts were held.

Boxing club chairperson Bongani Ndumo explained that each fighter was judged on punches that hit the target, a knock-out or technical knock-out (where the referee stops the match due to one of the opponents not being able to continue).

Mr Ndumo explained that the club’s primary goal is to attract the youth.

“We want to get the youth interested in boxing. From what we have seen, there is not much interest in the sport in Estcourt, but I would like to see it grow,” he said.
