Giving entrepreneurs a chance to shine

Ahead of the 2018 workshops, ENGEN Pitch & Polish has provided advice on the importance of values, in crafting your perfect pitch.

In business, there’s a saying about the perfect pitch.

An entrepreneur might have the best innovation in their hands, but is often let down by the way they present ideas to potential investors.

ENGEN Pitch & Polish aims to change that.

In its ninth year, this national entrepreneurial workshop and competition has helped more than 10 000 entrepreneurs make their big break in business.

The next to reap success could be you!

ENGEN Pitch & Polish has continued its partnership with Engen Petroleum Ltd, Nedbank, Raizcorp and Caxton Local Media, and is coming to Newcastle in September.

“The ENGEN Pitch & Polish initiative invites entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs to participate in a full-day workshop and competition, to build their businesses on firm foundations and values,” explained Unathi Njokweni-Magida, Head of Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement for Engen Petroleum.

“At Engen Petroleum, we continue to be a firm partner as this gives budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch and present their business or idea, to an audience, where the feedback loop creates an empowering learning environment.”

Tracy Afonso, Nedbank Head of Strategy: Professional Banking and Small Business, said the bank was proud to be a co-sponsor since 2016.

“Unlocking the potential of the SME sector is key to economic growth and job creation in South Africa. We believe this sponsorship aligns with our brand purpose, to use our financial expertise to enable individuals, families, businesses and society to do good.”

The guidelines are listed as awareness, clarity and alignment.

Awareness – consider which values guide choices in your life and settle on those you can control, i.e. commitment to learning, humility and self-respect.

Clarity – examine your values from all angles and align yourself with the values presented in your pitch. This would include willingness to learn conflicting with arrogance.

Alignment – your values should align with those of your potential investor. If you are against child labour for example, agreeing to go into partnership with an abuser of child labour would conflict with your values.

“While it may sometimes seem difficult to uphold your values in the face of a tempting deal, in the long term it will serve you well. As an individual and as a business, you will grow a reputation for being steadfast and true… And that is worth a great deal more than a quick buck!”
