Local walkers step it up Sani Pass in aid of CHOC

The CHOC Walk up Sani Pass is in support of children and teenagers with cancer or life-threatening blood disorders, and their families

A local group of walkers attempted the Sani Pass CHOC Walk recently. The CHOC Walk up Sani Pass is in support of children and teenagers with cancer or life-threatening blood disorders, and their families.
Adéle Richter tells the story: “As we laced up our hiking boots (and clipped in the cleats), we couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation. The infamous Sani Pass, a daunting climb in the Drakensberg Mountains, lay before us. But it wasn’t just the steep ascent that had us nervous – a fire was still burning in the area, threatening to turn our hike into a battle against the elements. We were walking for CHOC and nothing would stop us from getting this challenge done!

The wind howled and buffeted us from the start, making every step a struggle. The air was biting, with a chill that cut to the bone. We trudged on, our faces set against the gale, our eyes squinting against wind and dust.
We supported each other, offered words of encouragement and pushed on, driven by a shared determination to conquer the pass.

Finally, after hours of battling the wind and cold, we reached the top, where a Maluti beer at the highest pub in Africa was the order of the day.
The descent was a blur, our weary legs carrying us down the mountain as the cold began to subside. We emerged back into the calm and heat, our faces creased with smiles, and our hearts full of pride and accomplishment. We had faced the fury of Sani Pass and emerged victorious.”
